Play Guitar in a Band

If you are taking guitar lessons do you have a goal in mind? Do you want to play in a band for instance?

It’s always good to have some kind of goal to aim for. If it happens to be that you want to play in a band then you can focus on various aspects of your guitar playing and equipment and set targets.

Do you for instance want to start of playing rhythm guitar in a band to get experience before taking on lead guitar roles?

What style of music do you like?

What level of ability do you need to be?

What equipment will you need?

Do you have your own transport?

How will you find other musicians to play with?

Obviously you will know which style of music you like and who inspired you to take up the guitar in the first place. Knowing the style of music will help with focusing your studies and choosing the correct equipment to achieve your goal.

Equipment needed to play guitar in a band

Electric guitar, doesn’t have to be the most expensive, there are many good copies that will play just about as good as the originals.

Amplifier – I would suggest at least 30w amp, there are many to choose from, please don’t go out and by a 100watt valve amp and 4 by 12 cab to play in your local pub. (Yes I have tried this, they only sound great at very loud volumes and can sound bloody awful set on volume number1, as well as being very heavy to lug around).

My personal favourite is a 30 watt valve amp which means I can turn the volume up to a level where the valves are working nicely without clearing the room.

Tip- we always mic the amps up through the PA (this allows the band to get a good mix and spreads the sound around the room better-it’s not just for volume but it can be when needed-see you don’t need that 100watt amp ).

So a decent microphone and lead may come in handy.

Guitar tuner or effects pedal with a tuner.

Guitar effects-possibly depending on the type and range of musical styles played

Guitar stands

Spare guitar- something to consider, I always use two not just for the different sounds but also in case of string breakages-I can change guitar and finish a spot without having to stop and restring.

Ability needed to play guitar in a band?

If you are going for rhythm playing to start with, then knowledge of the basic chords, preferably with bar chords and the ability to play in time.

It is very important to try and do your own practice as often as possible with a drum machine set at the tempo of the song you are learning; timing is what makes good bands stand out, more than flashy playing. A lot of band practice time will be spent on timing; stops, starts, breaks, fills etc.

Practice the song until you can play it all the way through i.e. don’t just learn the notes but, the complete structure start to finish off by heart, this is the work that is needed to play guitar in a band and make it successful.

Understand the makeup of the song

E.g. intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-verse-verse-finish or whatever it may be. During band practice it’s common to hear the phrase” ok try again from the second verse” etc

Get a grasp of key structure as soon as possible, this will help you to understand which chords go together in a key. Initially you will probably be given the chords to play by the lead guitarist or from tab or the internet. Your enjoyment and satisfaction will increase many times when you can sit down and work out the chords for yourself.

How to find a band to play with?

There are various ways to find bands:

1. Internet sites that specialise in musicians looking for bands and bands looking for musicians.

2. Put cards in your local guitar shop.

3. Go to see live bands and talk to people there, a lot of musicians tend to know other musicians and bands and may know if another band or friend is looking for someone to play guitar in a band.

You don’t need to be a brilliant guitarist to start playing in a band, but the sooner you make that leap the more focused you guitar study and goals will become. Indeed I think too long with solitary practice can be counterproductive and lead to bad habits poor timing etc and too much focus on solos etc rather than the necessary core skills .There’s nothing like the motivation of knowing you’ve got to stand in front of a crowd and play guitar in a band at the weekend to get you away from the TV/PUB and practice guitar instead!.

I’m not Eric Clapton or Eddie Van Halen just a regular guy who loves his music and gets great satisfaction out of playing guitar and gigging regularly. I’m putting this website together to try and help guide anyone interested in learning the electric guitar, and outline some of the options to employ when considering electric guitar lessons.

Being of the ahem! Slightly older generation I’m amazed at the breadth of learning aids available nowadays, I remember a time before tab and the internet (yes I’ve been at it for well over 30 years!) when you had to transpose piano music or just had a book with the basic chords. I’ve spent so many hours just listening to sections of a song on an old tape machine, play/rewind, play/rewind, play/rewind etc trying to work them out by ear.

Today there are more ways than ever to help to learn to play the electric guitar, let’s consider some of your options:

1. Buy a book on electric guitar lessons

Ok buying a book, there are some very good instructional books on electric guitar lessons available and I tend to find these good for reference etc. but I find books don’t motivate you and inspire as well as, actually seeing someone demonstrate a technique or method.

2. Get private instruction to learn the guitar.

Getting private lessons, by far the best form of electric guitar lessons, as long as you can find someone competent to teach you in the style you want to learn. Preferably they would be actually playing music live in a band situation. The down side is that it won’t come cheap, and thats if you can find someone willing to do it. Good places to ask are the local music store, maybe the guitarist you just watched could recommend someone, most guitarists will only be too glad to offer advice (and if they are too far up their own arse to talk to you ask them if the bands guitarist advert was for an extra guitarist or was he leaving?!).

3. On line video guitar tutorials

Where were you when I was learning?! There is so much information on the internet; there are courses for all levels or just how to play this song or that solo. I would strongly suggest some of the more respected courses for someone starting out that have a structured progression of learning to get from point A to point B. The reason that I suggest a proper course rather than cherry picking bits and bobs is that I believe that learning the basics of chord structure scales and keys is necessary. Once these concepts are grasped then you will be able to listen to a song and probably be able to work out the chords and solos yourself quicker than reaching for the internet. I could compare this to the give a hungry man a fish or teach him how to fish analogy.

You need to think about structured practice time and long term goals and pick electric guitar lessons accordingly.

(see some reviews of electric guitar lessons and acoustic guitar lessons via internet courses on the links on the right)

To summarize electric guitar lessons options

The best electric guitar lessons will always be one to one personnel instruction with an instructor who will set you your goals according to your ability and where you want to end up.

Next I would suggest proper STRUCTURED electric guitar lessons from a reputable internet course.
I’d recommend Jamorama

If you want to check out their website Click Here

There are free resources on the internet, there’s quiet a lot on you tube etc but I find they tend to be bits and bobs ok if you want a quick view on how to play a particular song etc. There’s a lot of tab on the internet but to be quite honest some of it is garbage and misleading. I would only consider this as a supplementary resource that could actually be a dangerous distraction from your study course and time.

There are many books on the subject maybe look for one that is a combination of book and DVD as I feel that guitar tuition is better suited to visual/audio instruction.

Remember that whatever method of electric guitar lessons you choose, you will have to put regular practice time in EVERY DAY maybe only half an hour or so but if its STUCTURED correctly this will prove the best way to learn the guitar and advance.

Why a structured electric guitar course?

This is a very important point to bear in mind should you ever wish to play live in a band, I’ll give you a common situation (not with the current singer/band!) but a situation you must be able to deal with.

The band all decide on learning a new song, you arrive eager at the practice session and guess what, the singer can’t do the original key, we’ve got to change the key, can you play the song a tone lower with a couple of minutes notice so the singer can try that key, that didn’t work can you try another tone lower?

This is not a criticism of singers is just a fact that one voice can’t be expected to perform exactly the same as all the greatest singers in the world! If you’ve only learned copycat technique and no theory this is where you are going to start coming unstuck.

Don’t Make This Common Mistake When Learning Electric Guitar

Another reason for following a properly structured guitar training course can be illustrated by this actual example which I witnessed. A friend come around to see me bringing his mate a “fantastic guitarist” for a jam, this guy lets fly with the most amazing renditions of Van Halen, Malmsteen solos etc I was really impressed (for guitar wan…g anyway!), so I say ok I’ll play something bluesy in B minor for you to jam over, oops that didn’t sound so good, turns out he didn’t have a clue about scales or playing in key.

I could not believe someone could get to that level of ability in one aspect of guitar playing and totally bypass all the theory. He will be totally useless to any band unless he goes back and learns the necessary theory. I felt really sorry for him because he must have spent many hours over many years in his bedroom learning that stuff and the only one who’s ever going to hear it is his mum! (3 hours a day! ).
Sorry to labor this point but I think it’s quite possible to get obsessed with learning this solo or that solo, and with the resources on internet get very good at it without looking at the bigger picture of actually playing in a live band situation and what’s going to be required of you.
