Electric Guitar Lessons

electric guitar lessonsHi my name is John, I love guitars and play regularly in pub rock, blues and pop bands, currently playing in a classic rock band (band I currently play in). I’m not Eric Clapton or Eddie Van Halen just a regular guy who loves his music and gets great satisfaction out of playing guitar and gigging regularly. I’m putting this website together to try and help guide anyone interested in learning the electric guitar, and outline some of the options to employ when considering electric guitar lessons.

Being of the ahem! Slightly older generation I’m amazed at the breadth of learning aids available nowadays, I remember a time before tab and the internet (yes I’ve been at it for well over 30 years!) when you had to transpose piano music or just had a book with the basic chords. I’ve spent so many hours just listening to sections of a song on an old tape machine, play/rewind, play/rewind, play/rewind etc trying to work them out by ear.

Today there are more ways than ever to help to learn to play the electric guitar, let’s consider some of your options:

1. Buy a book on electric guitar lessons

Ok buying a book, there are some very good instructional books on electric guitar lessons available and I tend to find these good for reference etc. but I find books don’t motivate you and inspire as well as, actually seeing someone demonstrate a technique or method.

2. Get private instruction to learn the guitar.

Getting private lessons, by far the best form of electric guitar lessons, as long as you can find someone competent to teach you in the style you want to learn. Preferably they would be actually playing music live in a band situation. The down side is that it won’t come cheap, and thats if you can find someone willing to do it. Good places to ask are the local music store, maybe the guitarist you just watched could recommend someone, most guitarists will only be too glad to offer advice (and if they are too far up their own arse to talk to you ask them if the bands guitarist advert was for an extra guitarist or was he leaving?!).

3. On line video guitar tutorials

Where were you when I was learning?! There is so much information on the internet; there are courses for all levels or just how to play this song or that solo. I would strongly suggest some of the more respected courses for someone starting out that have a structured progression of learning to get from point A to point B. The reason that I suggest a proper course rather than cherry picking bits and bobs is that I believe that learning the basics of chord structure scales and keys is necessary. Once these concepts are grasped then you will be able to listen to a song and probably be able to work out the chords and solos yourself quicker than reaching for the internet. I could compare this to the give a hungry man a fish or teach him how to fish analogy.

You need to think about structured practice time and long term goals and pick electric guitar lessons accordingly.

To summarize electric guitar lessons options

The best electric guitar lessons will always be one to one personnel instruction with an instructor who will set you your goals according to your ability and where you want to end up.

Next I would suggest proper STRUCTURED electric guitar lessons from a reputable internet course.
I’d recommend Jamorama

electric guitar lessons

There are free resources on the internet, there’s quiet a lot on you tube etc but I find they tend to be bits and bobs ok if you want a quick view on how to play a particular song etc. There’s a lot of tab on the internet but to be quite honest some of it is garbage and misleading. I would only consider this as a supplementary resource that could actually be a dangerous distraction from your study course and time.

There are many books on the subject maybe look for one that is a combination of book and DVD as I feel that guitar tuition is better suited to visual/audio instruction.

Remember that whatever method of electric guitar lessons you choose, you will have to put regular practice time in EVERY DAY maybe only half an hour or so but if its STUCTURED correctly this will prove the best way to learn the guitar and advance.
